Claude Garache
Claude Garache (1929/1930–2023) was a renowned French artist celebrated for his meticulous exploration of the female form through painting, aquatint, and lithography. Born in Paris, Garache studied sculpture and drawing under Robert Coutin, where he developed a deep understanding of the human body that would define his work. In the 1950s, he trained with André Lhote and Fernand Léger, honing his skills and establishing connections that led him to Aimé Maeght, a prominent French art dealer, through the recommendations of Joan Miró and Marc Chagall.
Though Garache’s art exclusively depicted the female nude, he described his figures as “genderless,” symbolising universal humanity. Known for his layered technique, Garache built depth and intensity, creating forms that emerged almost three-dimensionally from the canvas. His mastery in aquatint and lithography earned him acclaim, with works included in major collections such as the Bibliothèque Nationale, MoMA, and exhibitions across Europe and the U.S.
