Roger Chastel

Roger Chastel (1909–1992) was a French painter and lithographer, known for his dynamic use of color and form. Initially trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Chastel's early work was influenced by classical traditions, but he later became associated with modernist movements, blending abstraction with figuration. His style evolved over the years, incorporating elements of surrealism and a focus on the human figure and landscape.

Chastel’s collaboration with poet Paul Éluard is particularly notable in the context of Derrière le Miroir, the influential French art journal published by the Mourlot printing workshop. In 1955, Chastel contributed a series of lithographs to an issue of the magazine that paired his visual art with Éluard's poetry, capturing the essence of surrealism and poetic abstraction. This collaboration is one of the highlights of Chastel’s career, bridging literature and visual art in a harmonious exploration of imagination and form.
